History 2001-2

31/10/02
We ended the club race season last night with a cold and wet final. None of the championship leaders changed their relative points positions, and both of the top 2 discarded this final race score as being amongst their worst ones of the season. So the championship podium (if we had one) positions would be:

1st

Louis Lazarus

2nd

Kam Ho

3rd

Jonathan Feakin

Well, how about that? All 3 are down as members of the Trisys racing team for next year. There’s obviously a shrewd team selector at work.

Unfortunately the Daytona International Winter Series seems to have been cancelled. I think I may have been the only person to have actually entered a team for it! But, racing does go on during the winter. See the calendar page for Daytona Ironman dates, and remember the D200 every Tuesday and Saturday, and occasional open enduros at Whilton Mill.

Despite what the race director said after yesterday’s race, Helen Dowling still holds the track lap record set on 8th August this year. The personnel at the track appear to have lost their written records but, aside from the records maintained on this site, I still have the original race printout.

With only 1 race to go in our club championship we are due for a much more exciting climax than F1 this year, as all 3 of the top spots are still to be decided. With the top of the table looking like this:

Louis Lazarus   668
  Kam Ho       652
  Jonathan Feakin  615
  Steve Bone     613
I will be fighting to grab the laurels from Louis, while Steve will want to take 3rd place from Jonathan, and could even take 2nd from me if he manages to win from pole and I score less than 102 points out of the maximum possible 125! No matter what he does Jonathan will be unable to improve upon 3rd.

The Daytona International Winter Series starts on 13th October. Form your teams and get your entries in now. Note that the date of the 1st scoring round in November has changed.

The final 2 races of the 2002 Karting Challenge championship series took place at Whilton Mill on 7th September. The Trisys team, consisting of ANKC club members Bram de Groot, Kam Ho, Louis Lazarus, and Jon Feakin, had a storming day and took home 8 trophies! Fastest lap and 3rd place in race 1, fastest lap and 2nd place in race 2, National Corporate Challenge Champions, UK Combined Challenge runners up (and winners of the UK Corporate Challenge, for which there was no trophy), National Combined Challenge Pole Position competition winners, UK Combined Challenge Fastest Laps competition winners. Remember also the Kent Corporate Challenge Champions trophy picked up at Buckmore Park in August... what an amazing season! Not bad for a team comprising 2 drivers over 50 years old and a 3rd weighing in at over 115 kilos (minimum weight for the series is 75 kilos)!

The Grand Final of the Daytona Corporate Challenge took place on Sunday 15th September. 2 Abbey National teams had qualified and a 3rd got a wild-card entry into the final, and we finished 2nd, 8th, and 12th. The 2nd place finishers were quite pleased to win tickets to see the Superbikes at Brands Hatch in 2003, but disappointed to miss out on winning the Platinum Tickets for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone!

With only 2 club races left before the end of the season it is time to plan your winter racing. So far we have at least 1 team entered for the 1st (non-championship) round of the Daytona Winter Series. Scroll down for dates.

After the heats of the Daytona Corporate Challenge we had 5 teams take part in the semi-finals, and of these, 2 have qualified for the 3-hour final on Sunday 15th September.

Ever since the Thunderkart fleet was first introduced at Daytona International some 2½ years ago the karts have been getting steadily slower, and there have been no improvements in our club lap record chart for 2 years. After the club’s July race we decided to reset our lap chart so that newer club members would stand a chance of getting their 15 minutes of fame. However, before we could implement this in August, Daytona managed to get the jump on us. In the last month Daytona’s karts have somehow got quicker, and they have reset the overall track lap record. Rumour has it that new engines have been fitted, but I have not been able to verify this report. Anyway, there is now a new lap record for hire karts at Daytona and, as of our club race last Friday, it is of course held by a club member. Congratulations to Helen Dowling. I look forward to seeing husband Nick attempting to match your time.

The final 2 rounds of the Kent Challenge (first of the 4 parts of the 2002 Karting Challenge Championships to be decided) took place at Buckmore Park last Saturday. The Trisys team finished 2nd in the morning race and 13th in the afternoon race to take 1st prize overall in the Corporate class in the Kent Challenge. Buckmore Park locals Aye Gee Motorcycles easily took 1st prize in the Autochallenge class, and we were very pleased to have been able to out drive them in the wet morning race on their home track!

The first heat of the Daytona Corporate Challenge, which was due to take place on 29th July, was cancelled due to a flooded track so we were forced to have all 3 Abbey teams entered so far race against each other in the 2nd heat on 5th August. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places going to Abbey National says it all. Well done teams. Obviously, all 3 teams go through to the semi-finals. There is another heat scheduled for 19th August and, for any ANKC members who are interested in taking part, the current lap record holder is looking for someone to partner her for a late entry into this event.

There are still 3 races remaining before we reach the end of our season, but you may want to start planning your winter race schedule now. Here are some events which you may be interested in, and which I can safely predict some ANKC members will be taking part in.

Daytona International runs the D200 Open 2-hour Endurance Races every Tuesday evening, and Saturday at noon.
They have also announced the following dates for a Winter Hire-Kart 3-Hour Race Championship:
Sunday 13/10/2002 Non Championship
Sunday 10/11/2002 Round 1
Sunday 01/12/2002 Round 2
Sunday 12/01/2003 Round 3
Sunday 09/02/2003 Round 4
I suspect we may be represented by more than 1 team in this series.
Finally, as well as their Sunday evening D50 races for solo drivers, Daytona are now running a series of Ironman races, which are 1-hour races or, about the equivalent of a medium length stint in an enduro!

With 6 venues out of the 10 on the Karting Challenge calendar visited, and 12 of the 20 races completed, the Trisys team is well placed in the contest for the end of season trophies in the Corporate class. So far this year the team has been built entirely around ANKC members, with Bob Hillier and Jon Feakin making guest appearances along with regulars Bram, Louis, and Kam.

Stuart Shearman made his first appearance in the Challenge this season at the Clay Pigeon round last weekend, racing for JP Safety Engineering. Read Stuart’s account of his adventures. It’s quite amusing if you know Stuart, but also a bit long, so you may want to skip straight to the Sunday karting bit. Worth reading as there is a serious lesson in there. It is absolutely inexcusable to run into a driver standing stationary on the track beside his kart when the track is dry, with good visibility, and with yellow flags waving. Even if the flags had not been out this kind of thing should never have happened. Stuart must be getting used to broken bones now, but next time it might be you, or worse yet, me! When there is an incident on track, especially if it involves a person without a kart chassis beneath them, please slow down and ensure that you have your own kart totally under control before approaching the incident.

Look out for the ANKC teams racing in the preliminary rounds of the Daytona Corporate Challenge on 29th July and 5th August.

Those of you who remember the club’s first year at Daytona International may recall that we used to get detailed lapcharts and laptimes for all drivers. After a while the software used at the track changed and they could no longer provide this data. Well, now it’s back! Race director Andy has found out how to extract the data and can now provide us with it on a floppy disk. This time around I don’t have time to do anything fancy with it, but you can download the CSV files and play around with them yourselves at:

Louis Lazarus has once again taken the laurels in the Annual ANKC Championship. I know that some of the younger drivers in the club are quicker, but when is someone else going to string together enough consistently good performances to break this 4-year winning streak?

The Trisys Endurance Kart Racing Team (consisting of club members Bram, Louis, and Kam) has enjoyed a fairly good season. They came 2nd in the Corporate Challenge championship, and 3rd in the AutoChallenge championship. These 2 series are recombining next year and the result sounds like it should be very good. There will be more races at more locations and there should also be bigger grids. As well as the national championship, the series will be subdivided into regional championships and it will not be necessary for a company to take part in the whole series. Cost per racing hour will be about the same as for the last 2 years.

3 ANKC teams took part in the Daytona Challenge National Final held on the 12th August. To everyone’s surprise the rain held off, and we had a great day out. Our teams finished 2nd, 4th, and 9th. A pretty good result considering that 570 teams originally entered, and many of the other teams also had lots of experience. As might be expected, the leader board was dominated by the local teams.

04/08/01
The date originally announced for the National Final of the Daytona Challenge has been brought forward. It is now scheduled to take place on the 12th August. Why not come along and support the 3 ANKC teams? Registration is at 13:00, so I guess the race will probably start around 14:00-14:30.

04/07/01
3 of the club teams that entered the Daytona Challenge have made it through to the National Final which is due to take place on 21st August. This is quite an achievement, but let’s see... there are 3 steps on the podium aren’t there?

18/06/01
Of the 6 club teams which eventually entered the Daytona Challenge, 5 have made it through to the Regional Final. It looks like the Regional semis will be quite tough as only 5 teams out of 25 will go through to the National Final. Still, although extremely unlikely, it is mathematically possible that we could all make it. Let’s hope we all draw good karts on the night.

It seems that the 24-hour race proposed for Warden Law in September will not now be taking place. Some of us are going to see if we can arrange to go to the one in Dubai during November instead.

04/05/01
The club has entered 5 teams under the company name in the Daytona Challenge. 3 of these teams took part in the first round at MK on 2nd May. In a field of 27 teams they finished 2nd, 3rd, and 6th which means that 2 of these teams go forward to the semi-finals. Our other 2 teams will be competing in another round on 21st May.

After the first few ad-hoc events FasTrack have now announced that they will be holding an Open GP event on the first Tuesday of every month. Those of you who have already tried this circuit should be aware that they have now done something to the tyres (and maybe the rest of the kart set-up). One noticeable effect of the changes is less grip and lap times about 2 seconds slower. All previous lap records have been wiped.

02/04/01
Unfortunately, the 24-hour race at Raceland, which has become a regular annual event for a number of club members, has been cancelled this year. However, the organiser of the Corporate Challenge in conjunction with Playscape will be putting on a 24-hour race at Warden Law on the weekend of 22/23 September. Entries are being solicited from amongst the Challenge and Auto-Challenge teams, so I expect to see 2 or 3 teams containing club members entered.

28/03/01
A new indoor circuit has recently opened at Bletchley. It is a welcome addition to the facilities in the area, and should prove especially useful for introducing new members to karting. Quite a few club members have already tried it out including all those at a club event held as a curtain raiser to the season.

26/03/01
Half-a-dozen club members visited Park Royal to race with a prospective Abbey National (London) karting club. Race Report from Stuart Shearman.
